어떤 능력을 갖추어야 할까?Will My Job Be Safe in the AI Era? What Abilities Do We Need?

Since the AI era began, many people have started worrying about their jobs. In every department, among all kinds of people, plenty of them voice it. These are stories I hear at the company where I actually work.

  • Development team: “AI is really good at development. Will I still be a developer next year?”
  • Planner: “It writes the whole planning document for me, so I don’t think planners will be needed anymore.”
  • Designer: “You just tell it what you want and it makes it, so it seems like anyone could do this, doesn’t it?”

These three people I heard from spoke on the basis of what they had experienced after giving their own work to AI. They all seemed to be in shock. Will these concerns actually come true? To know whether the worry will really happen, I thought it might help to hear the position of someone who hires people and runs a company. This is something I recently heard directly from an executive.

Executive: “If everyone can just make it with AI, then I can simply have AI do it myself. Why should I use that person?”

Most people who hear this will probably think, this is really the end.

Who Is Under Threat?

I think there was a reason that executive said such a thing. The executive did not state the reason directly; this is my own interpretation. I read it as coming from the fact that the person in charge did not properly understand how the deliverable they produced was made, or what it contained. The story of the person in charge below is also something I heard directly.

When the person in charge was asked why something had come out the way it did, the answer was that AI had done it, so they did not know. When asked to explain the deliverable, they understood so little of it that they stumbled over their answer. Even so, that person was confident. The reason was that the deliverable had turned out well. But this deliverable that had turned out well did not win agreement from other people.

What kind of deliverable should we be making? (This holds no matter what work we do.) Work is created and demanded for people. Work exists for people’s convenience. Work exists for people’s enjoyment. This will probably not change, however much the times change and however far AI advances. That is why we have to make deliverables that people can be satisfied with.

Isn’t it enough for the output to turn out well? One might think so, but whether a given output satisfies a person differs from person to person. That is why the “person in charge” is needed. When someone is not satisfied, we need a person in charge who can explain and persuade that person. Because all of this is for the sake of people’s satisfaction, I think satisfaction is something AI has a hard time calculating. People are needed to handle the territory that AI cannot calculate.

The person in charge I mentioned earlier, the one who “doesn’t know because AI did it,” will not be able to persuade anyone. We need someone who can persuade us.

Can’t AI Just Do the Explaining?

I also wonder whether, as AI advances, it might explain and persuade logically and well. But what is needed here is not only logical integrity. When people feel reassured by an explanation or an act of persuasion, the presence of the person giving it plays a large part. The presence of a person I mean here gives us the reassurance of a “responsible party.”

When someone gives an explanation and it turns out to be wrong, people ask the person who gave it to take responsibility. “You explained it and it was wrong, so what are you going to do about it?” That kind of direction. It is natural that AI cannot be 100% satisfactory. If that causes a problem, someone will have to take responsibility and clean up, or take responsibility and apologize. As far as I know, in autonomous-vehicle accidents the driver sometimes shares responsibility. That demands for responsibility will increasingly be directed at manufacturers is my own prediction.

A service in which no one but the AI model bears responsibility is one nobody will accept. For that reason, I think a world that is satisfied with AI’s explanation alone will be hard to arrive at.

The “Smart” Person We Need Now

In one interview, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang talked about his definition of a “smart person.” Everyone had thought software programming was the smartest profession, but he said the first thing AI solved was programming. The ability to be intelligent and solve technical problems, he said, has now become a common ability. Probably everyone agrees, and it is probably the basis for the worries of the people I mentioned at the start.

The other kind of “smartness” Huang described is someone who is technically astute but also able to empathize with people, and able to read what is unspoken and what cannot be known. He also listed data analysis, first-principles thinking, life experience and wisdom, and a sense for other people. I agree wholeheartedly. The world we live in is a world where we work for people, so we must be able to empathize with people’s hearts. And we need the ability to see beyond what is visible.

AI can imitate, but I think it will have a hard time empathizing with the complicated hearts of people. People are enormously complicated. In the same situation, at the same time, every person has different thoughts and different feelings. Don’t we have a proverb for this: you may know the depth of ten fathoms of water, but you cannot know the heart of one person.

Also, seeing beyond what is visible is a different territory from AI’s inference. Inference always rests on grounds. It is the territory of drawing conclusions from large amounts of data. Of course, accurate intuition is also the result of inference from a great deal of personal data, but the grounds for that inference are often in irrational territory and often cannot be explained.

I believe people with these abilities are the people who can explain and persuade what we need.

What Should We Learn?

I think these abilities are not taught in school. They don’t come from diligently memorizing math formulas. Huang said that such a smart person might score horribly on the SAT (the American college entrance exam).

Our society has used pressure interviews a lot. A pressure interview was a method for finding out whether a person can stay rational and make sound judgments even in confusing and difficult situations. Some respond by asking whether it isn’t really a test for finding “psychopaths.” We have been looking for people who are not emotional and who can carry out assigned work like a computer. But I think AI can now do that better than anyone. An ability to stay rational and carry out an assigned task accurately cannot be told apart from an executive having AI do it directly.

We will have to learn more about people. What feelings a person has at which moments, what mood they are in at which moments. What they need and what they find enjoyable, we will have to learn. Not merely theoretical knowledge about people, but time spent experiencing things directly and meeting people directly, building up our own empathy and instinct, will be necessary.

This piece rests on what I heard directly at the company where I work and on my own interpretation of it. Not every company and not every occupation will be the same.

Let’s look again at the work we are doing now. Can I persuade others of the result of my work? Can I explain the reason for my work? Can I explain the meaning of the work I am doing?
