realpath: illegal option -- -
usage: realpath [-q] [path ...]

같은 오류는 2022년 Espruino 의 make clean 이슈에 usage: realpath [-q] [path ...]

맥의 man realpath 도 형태를 realpath [-q] [path ...]

  • ln -s "$rel/out" proj/lnk 는 종료 코드 0으로 링크를 만들었고 readlink 가 /out 을 보여 줬다.

No such file or directory 였다.

python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.realpath(sys.argv[1]))' proj/nope/x/y

proj/build, proj/nope, proj/nope/x/y, 링크를 지나 없는 proj/link/nope, proj/nope/../build, 끝 슬래시가 붙은 proj/nope/, 공백과 한글이 든 없는 경로까지 일곱 경우 모두 grealpath -m 과 글자까지 같았다. 링크를 풀지 않는 -s 는 os.path.normpath(os.path.abspath(p)) 가 proj/link, proj/link/../build, proj/./build//, ../rp-lab4/proj/build 네 경우 모두 grealpath -s 와 같았다.

# A. GNU (비교 기준)
grealpath --relative-to="$base" -- "$target"
# B. perl: realpath 로 푼 뒤 abs2rel
perl -MFile::Spec -MCwd=realpath -e 'print File::Spec->abs2rel(realpath($ARGV[0]), realpath($ARGV[1])), "\n"' -- "$target" "$base"
# C. Python: realpath 로 푼 뒤 relpath
python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.relpath(os.path.realpath(sys.argv[1]), os.path.realpath(sys.argv[2])))' "$target" "$base"
# D. Python: realpath 없이 abspath 만
python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.relpath(os.path.abspath(sys.argv[1]), os.path.abspath(sys.argv[2])))' "$target" "$base"

경우 A grealpath B perl C Python D abspath 만
상대 링크 대상 ../src/app ../src/app ../src/app ../link
절대 링크 대상 ../other ../other ../other ../abslink
/tmp 와 /private/tmp 섞음 ../build ../build ../build ../../../../../tmp/rp-lab2/proj/build
0, ../nope/x

기준이 proj/src 이고 대상이 proj/nope/x 일 때 A 는 No such file or directory

relpath() { # relpath 대상 [기준폴더=현재폴더] (GNU realpath --relative-to 대신)
  if [ $# -lt 1 ]; then echo "relpath: 대상이 없다" >&2; return 64; fi
  perl -MFile::Spec -MCwd=realpath -e '
    my ($t, $b) = @ARGV;
    my ($rt, $rb) = (realpath($t), realpath($b));
    die "relpath: 경로를 풀 수 없다: " . (defined $rt ? $b : $t) . "\n" unless defined $rt && defined $rb;
    print File::Spec->abs2rel($rt, $rb), "\n"' -- "$1" "${2:-.}" || return 1
}

Purpose

To help a reader who ran a Linux-style realpath --relative-to or -m line on a Mac and hit an error, or whose script hid the error and ran the next command with an empty path, choose a safe way to do the same path calculation on the Mac.

Key idea

The realpath on this Mac (26.6.2) rejected nine forms with exit code 1, the six short options -s, -m, -e, -L, -P, -z that I tried and three long options, and accepts only -q. When the error is discarded the variable is empty, so cd ends at 0 in place and ln -s creates a link that points to /out. -m can be replaced by Python's os.path.realpath, and relative paths by perl or Python after realpath, but when a middle component of the path is missing the perl one-liner prints a wrong value without any error.

After reading

Find the lines in your scripts that use GNU options of realpath, replace them with the relpath function or the Python one-liners below, and check that nothing discards the realpath error with 2>/dev/null or assigns straight into a local variable.

Contents

One-line summary: The Mac’s realpath rejects the nine GNU options I tried with exit code 1, so replace -m with Python’s os.path.realpath and –relative-to with the checked perl function relpath.

If you run the Linux line realpath --relative-to=build src/app, which prints the relative path between two folders, in a Mac terminal, no path comes out and only an error message remains. This article shows, from runs on this Mac, what the Mac’s realpath rejects, what the empty variable of a script that discards the error does on the next line, what can stand in on the Mac for what GNU realpath did, and where the results diverge.

realpath: illegal option -- -
usage: realpath [-q] [path ...]

The environment was /bin/realpath on macOS 26.6.2 arm64 with bash 3.2.57, on 2026-11-03. The GNU realpath used for comparison is Homebrew’s coreutils 9.11, which is on this Mac under the name grealpath (the manual page I saved is the 9.12 edition), and the stand-in tools were the perl 5.34.1 and the Python 3.9.6 of /usr/bin/python3 that this Mac has by default. Output re-run with Homebrew’s Python 3.14.7 placed first matched the saved output character for character. I ran five test scripts twice each, and the second output matched the first character for character. The same error appears, with the usage: realpath [-q] [path ...] line, in a 2022 Espruino issue about make clean. In this English version the two messages inside the relpath function below are translated into English; the tests ran with the Korean messages.

A few terms. The exit code is the number a command leaves when it ends, and 0 means success. GNU is the command set many Linux distributions use, while the Mac’s commands are BSD-derived, so even with the same name the options differ. realpath prints the real absolute path after resolving .. and symbolic links (files that point to another path like a shortcut). A relative path is the route to walk from some starting folder.

Options the Mac’s realpath accepts and rejects

With a folder proj/build and a link proj/link (pointing to src/app), I changed only the option and measured the exit code and the output. The Mac rejected nine forms with exit code 1 and printed nothing: the three long options --relative-to=, --relative-base= and --strip, and the six short options -s, -m, -e, -L, -P and -z. A short option shows its letter, as in illegal option -- s, but a long option does not say which one it was and shows only illegal option -- -. The only option the Mac accepts is -q. The Mac’s man realpath also lists just one form, realpath [-q] [path ...], and describes -q as an option that keeps warnings from being printed when realpath(3) fails. grealpath handled the same eleven lines all with exit code 0.

The GNU manual describes --relative-to=dir as printing the resolved file names relative to the specified directory, -m as treating a component as a directory if it is missing, and -s as not resolving symbolic links and only tidying ., .. and repeated / (the English here is a paraphrase of the manual). None of these three has a counterpart on the Mac.

When the error is discarded, the empty variable does work on the next line

I measured scripts that add 2>/dev/null because the option error is a nuisance. rel=$(realpath --relative-to=proj/src proj/build 2>/dev/null) ended with exit code 1 and rel an empty string. The same line with grealpath gives 0 and ../build. This is what the empty rel did on the following lines.

  • cd "$rel" ended with exit code 0 and the current folder was unchanged. It went nowhere, yet it looks like a success.
  • ln -s "$rel/out" proj/lnk created a link with exit code 0, and readlink showed /out. The place where the relative path should have gone was empty, so $rel/out became /out, and the link now points to /out at the root.
  • In a function under set -e, local r=$(realpath --relative-to=… 2>/dev/null) failed yet its exit code was 0 and execution reached the next echo. This is because local overwrites the exit code of the assignment. Assigning directly with r=$(…) and no local made the set -e script stop with exit code 1.

The loa issue 1197 from July 2026 reports that workspace-cleanup.sh called -m in the form real_path=$(realpath -m "$full_path" 2>/dev/null) || return 1, which fails every time on a Mac, so the cleanup step was silently skipped. That line differs from the empty-variable cases above because || return 1 catches the failure, but a line that discards the error passing quietly through on a Mac is the same. An unguarded line in the same issue carried on to the next check with real_path empty and reported a perfectly valid path as outside the allowed range. It is better to check that rel or real_path is non-empty before using it, or to make the assignment itself stop the script.

Missing paths: the Mac’s default was the same as GNU’s -e

The GNU manual describes the default behavior as succeeding when every component except the last is an existing directory, and -e as failing if the file does not exist (these are paraphrases of the manual). To see where the Mac stands, I measured six paths side by side with grealpath -e. For the existing proj/build, the link proj/link, and proj/link/main.c, an existing file reached through the link, both returned exit code 0 and the same absolute path. For proj/nope (only the last component missing), proj/nope/x (a middle component missing) and proj/link/nope (missing beyond the link), both returned exit code 1 with No such file or directory. So on these six paths the Mac’s default realpath matched grealpath -e. By contrast, the default of grealpath resolved proj/nope, where only the last component is missing, to an absolute path with exit code 0 (the Mac gives 1), gave 1 when a middle component is missing, and gave 0 with -m even when the path was missing from the middle.

When you want the absolute path of a file that does not exist yet, which is what -m did, Python stood in.

python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.realpath(sys.argv[1]))' proj/nope/x/y

In all seven cases it was identical to grealpath -m down to the character: proj/build, proj/nope, proj/nope/x/y, proj/link/nope (missing beyond a link), proj/nope/../build, proj/nope/ with a trailing slash, and a missing path containing a space and Korean characters. For -s, which does not resolve links, os.path.normpath(os.path.abspath(p)) matched grealpath -s in all four cases: proj/link, proj/link/../build, proj/./build// and a ../ relative path. The Mac’s default realpath resolved proj/link to proj/src/app, and proj/link/../build ended with exit code 1. It reads as if it followed the link first and then applied .., looking for proj/src/build and failing. That interpretation is a guess from the output alone.

Instead of –relative-to: four methods and where they diverge

For relative paths I ran four methods on the same inputs as grealpath --relative-to.

# A. GNU (the reference)
grealpath --relative-to="$base" -- "$target"
# B. perl: resolve with realpath, then abs2rel
perl -MFile::Spec -MCwd=realpath -e 'print File::Spec->abs2rel(realpath($ARGV[0]), realpath($ARGV[1])), "\n"' -- "$target" "$base"
# C. Python: resolve with realpath, then relpath
python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.relpath(os.path.realpath(sys.argv[1]), os.path.realpath(sys.argv[2])))' "$target" "$base"
# D. Python: abspath only, without realpath
python3 -c 'import os,sys; print(os.path.relpath(os.path.abspath(sys.argv[1]), os.path.abspath(sys.argv[2])))' "$target" "$base"

I used thirteen cases: sibling folders (../../build), downward (src/app), upward (../..), the same folder (.), a name with a space, a name with Korean characters, a name starting with a dash (../-dash), a relative symbolic link as the target, an absolute symbolic link as the target, a target missing only at the end, a base folder that does not exist, an input mixing /tmp and /private/tmp, and a target missing from the middle. A, B and C gave the same text in twelve of the thirteen cases. Three more cases, where the paths were given relative to the folder I had cd’d into (../src/app), were also the same.

D differed in three of the twelve cases. For the relative-link target A followed the link and gave ../src/app, while D gave the link’s own name ../link. The absolute link also split into ../other and ../abslink. On the Mac /tmp is a link to /private/tmp, so for the same folder named in two ways A gave ../build and D gave ../../../../../tmp/rp-lab2/proj/build. D’s text climbs up to the root and comes back down through /tmp, so it is long and differs from A, which makes it hard to use as a value to compare or to carry to another folder.

The four places where they diverge are collected here.

Case A grealpath B perl C Python D abspath only
Relative link as target ../src/app ../src/app ../src/app ../link
Absolute link as target ../other ../other ../other ../abslink
/tmp mixed with /private/tmp ../build ../build ../build ../../../../../tmp/rp-lab2/proj/build
Target missing from the middle exit code 1, error exit code 0, ../.. exit code 0, ../nope/x exit code 0, ../nope/x

The most striking difference is the thirteenth case, the target missing from the middle. With the base proj/src and the target proj/nope/x, A printed No such file or directory with exit code 1. C gave exit code 0 and ../nope/x. B gave exit code 0 and printed ../... There is no error and the value is wrong.

In B, perl’s realpath returns undef when it cannot resolve the path, and abs2rel treated that undef as the current folder. The ../.. was the current folder measured from the base proj/src. When I ran it again from three different current folders it gave ../.., ../build and ../../elsewhere/deep, each the same as grealpath --relative-to=proj/src .. So the same input gives a different wrong value depending on the folder you run it from. If such a value goes into ln -s or cd, the same thing happens as the /out above.

So I tested a function that adds a check to B. When the path cannot be resolved it ends with exit code 1 and a message, and if the base is omitted it uses the current folder.

relpath() { # relpath TARGET [BASE=current folder] (in place of GNU realpath --relative-to)
  if [ $# -lt 1 ]; then echo "relpath: no target given" >&2; return 64; fi
  perl -MFile::Spec -MCwd=realpath -e '
    my ($t, $b) = @ARGV;
    my ($rt, $rb) = (realpath($t), realpath($b));
    die "relpath: cannot resolve the path: " . (defined $rt ? $b : $t) . "\n" unless defined $rt && defined $rb;
    print File::Spec->abs2rel($rt, $rb), "\n"' -- "$1" "${2:-.}" || return 1
}

Compared with grealpath --relative-to in nine cases, eight gave the same output (sibling, upward, same folder, space, Korean characters, dash, link target, missing only at the end). For the target missing from the middle, both gave exit code 1, with only the wording of the error message differing. A call with the base omitted gave ../src/app, the same as grealpath --relative-to=., and with no arguments it gave 64.

Relative links made with this function still open when the whole folder is moved. ln -s "$(relpath "$P/build" .)" to-build-rel pointed to ../../build, and ln -s "$(realpath "$P/build")" to-build-abs, made with an absolute path, pointed to /private/tmp/rp-lab3/proj/build. Both opened as folders at first. After I moved the project folder with mv, the relative link opened and the absolute link was broken. Making links is covered in a separate article that tested ln -sr, so this one only dealt with the path calculation.

Whether to install grealpath and only change the command name, or to use the replacements in this article, is a judgment of this article and not a test result. For a script that runs only on your own Mac, changing the name to grealpath needs no comparison of output text (all eleven lines I tried returned exit code 0). For a script that runs on someone else’s Mac there is no guarantee that coreutils is installed, so switching to the perl or Python that is already there avoids assuming an installation. I did not test the installation steps.

What I did not test

I did not test a direct comparison with GNU realpath on Linux (the grealpath 9.11 on this Mac stood in), other macOS versions, zsh, other GNU option names such as -E, --canonicalize and --no-symlinks, a replacement for the NUL-separated output of -z, paths containing newlines, calls with several paths at once, paths on a different volume, paths through folders without permission, or a replacement for --relative-base. The thirteen cases were measured on one folder layout on this Mac. The public records are two, Espruino in 2022 and loa in 2026, and I did not check search volume.

Three-line summary

  • The realpath on this Mac (26.6.2) rejected nine forms with exit code 1, the six short options -s, -m, -e, -L, -P, -z other than -q and three long options, and when the error is discarded the empty variable leads to an in-place 0 for cd and a link to /out for ln -s.
  • The Mac’s default realpath matched grealpath -e on six paths, Python’s os.path.realpath matched -m in seven cases, and normpath(abspath) matched -s in four.
  • For –relative-to, perl and Python after realpath matched in twelve of thirteen cases, but when a middle component is missing the perl one-liner prints ../.. without an error, so use the relpath function with its check.
